Before writing my essay on happiness, daring say that I know a thing or two about life, I used to think that the modern world just needs people to rush. They rush for money, they rush for relationships, and they rush for their better future, and so on. Then, they fail to keep up with the pace and start thinking about themselves as about losers who fall behind in the life race for their happiness.

Come on, I’m serious. Modern humans study 24/7, work during their vacations, look through the news lines while brushing their teeth, watch a movie and read a book simultaneously. “Minimum of time, maximum of effectiveness” is a mantra of the present time. They even fail to notice the fact that the more they rush, the less things they can do well in time.

Who are people that showed me the key? They are the supporters of the “slow life” culture. Their life motto is: “Slow down to gain speed”. They refused participating in the race and try to get satisfaction from every moment of their lives.

What Is “Slow Life”?

The “Slow life” initiative started in 1986, when Carlo Petrini, an Italian journalist, raised against opening a McDonald’s restaurant near the Spanish Steps, one of the most famous destinations in Rome. To support a protest, he organized a banquet where everyone had the possibility to eat some traditional Italian pasta.

Despite the fact that McDonald’s still had been opened, the efforts of this man were not wasted: the restaurant’s “M” letter and traditional golden arch were made several times smaller. Additionally, thanks to Petrini, the movement called “slow food” was organized. Its supporters stand against tasteless fast-food cookery and claim that people should relax at least when sitting at the dinner table.

“Slow” movement now includes more than ten directions. Besides the “slow food”, there exist slow education, slow science, slow medical care, slow fashion, slow reading, slow town, slow TV, slow travelling, and so on. Many organizations have been established on the basis of this initiative.

The number of supporters is still increasing.

What They Stand For

Slow life supporters do not accept accelerated life tempo, they think it is senseless and imposed. According to them, a loser is not the one who works less, but the one who fills their schedule up to the very limit and always hurries somewhere.

Those who rush are made to slide through the surface. They don’t have time to look into deeper senses, to build relations with the world and other people.

Finally, I agreed with “slow lifers” who think that people work a lot to create an illusion of heavy business, to show their importance or to forget about routine troubles. Though you should keep in mind: I do not encourage people to quit this freaking civilization and to start living in forests. I am just an ordinary human who wants to live well in the modern accelerated world. The philosophy of slow life adepts leads to the search of the balance.

Hurry up when there is a need to hurry. But if it is not obligatory to rush, just slow down.

Why You Should Try It

The race is always accompanied by stress, insomnia, digestion disorders, etc. According to the statistics of the American Psychological Association, 75% of adult Americans experience moderate to high stress levels each month.

Chronic stress increases blood pressure and the level of sugar in the blood, lowers concentration, breaks the functioning of the digestion system, and causes insomnia. That was the thing I used to experience myself while being a student of Journalism faculty. This can hurt you both physically and mentally, so if there appears any possibility to avoid such adventures, I’d recommend you choosing that way.

The lack of sleep destroys your nervous and immune systems, can cause diabetes and heart diseases, provokes irritation and depression. As soon as you start eating too much fast food, there will come the time to meet headaches and excess weight, to deal with the “bad” cholesterol level.

One’s love of speed can end up lethally too.

According to the data published by World Health Organization, 3000 people die and 100000 people get seriously injured in road accidents the reason for which was excessive car speed. 2000 people die because of work stress in Japan every year.

So, as I’ve estimated, science and statistics support “slow” people. They get more satisfaction from their life and suffer less from illnesses because they avoid stresses and try enjoying every moment.

How to Start

There is no universal rule of “slowing down” in life. Still, I’ve decided to add some tips that could help you understand what the right direction is.

How to Eat

  • Avoid fast food and ready-to-cook meals like frozen lasagna or pizza. In a pinch, you can have some fruits, vegetable salads, or nuts;
  • Do not eat on the move;
  • Love cooking. It can work like meditation;
  • Cook holistic meals consisting of fresh ingredients;
  • Gain a habit: have a family supper; do not eat alone in front of the computer’s display.

How to Work (or Study)

  • Work in a way that lets you have enough time for yourself and your family;
  • Learn to say “No”;
  • Quit your job if you have been envisaging that for quite a while;
  • Devote 10 minutes per day to meditation or 20 minutes per day to an afternoon nap. This can give a significant boost to your performance and concentration. John Kennedy, Thomas Edison, Napoleon Bonaparte, and John Rockefeller used to do that.
  • Inspiration comes when you’re relaxed: while taking a shower, having a walk, meditating, running, going to bed. “Slow” mode of your brain helps it process new information.
  • Take days off without feeling guilty;
  • Do not work on weekends and vacations.

You get it, don’t you? Your rest has to be the time for yourself and people who mean a lot to you. Do not let your job become your life, even if you love it very much. That tempo is not what you can keep up with forever.

How to Rest

  • Walk a lot. Walking makes your health stronger, calms your mind, lets you notice many small details, and maintain relationships with the world around;
  • Allow yourself to do nothing. Do not forger that Charles Darwin used to work 4 hours per day, and Albert Einstein could sit in his cabinet and mess around for hours;
  • Do not try to shove all kinds of entertainment into one evening: cinema, concert, and book, and everything… It doesn’t work like that;
  • Walk in the countryside. A walk in the forest is the best anti-depressant;
  • Go in for handmade or find another relaxing hobby.

How to Go in for Sports

  • Do not put yourself through the wringer while training. Sports should fill you with energy, not turn you into a cripple.
  • Don’t forget that fats burn out when your heartbeat frequency is nearly 70-75% of the maximal pulse. This happens during fast walking or slow running. If your pulse is higher, your body starts consuming carbohydrates. That’s not about losing your excess weight, but about draining your energy away from you;
  • Make sure your body is ready to perform a complicated exercise before you start mastering it;
  • Try slow healthy sports: yoga, pilates, chi kung.

How to Drive a Car

  • Use your car only in critical cases. You can get to the most places on foot or public transport.
  • Do not rush. You’ll pass 2 miles in 3 minutes at 65 mph. You’ll win a minute if you speed up to 90 mph. What will you get with that minute?

What to Conclude?

Here I’m going to say the banal thing again: one common formula of slowing down in life does not exist. It is your call where to decelerate a bit. The only things that can prevent you from that is your greed, your habits, and your fear of falling behind. You’ll need courage to refuse speed. But now you know that being slow is normal and even useful.
